Upgrade BizTalk 2006 R2 Trial Edition to BizTalk 2006 R2 Standard Edition

Today I'm visiting a customer on-site. We developed an Enterprise Service Bus and integrated two legacy applications so that a mainframe can be phased out. Because this ESB is plan of a broader company wide ESB, the customer was unsure about the BizTalk edition: Standard vs. Enterprise. But because an application had to go in production, we installed the Trial Edition.

Now that the customer is happy and decided to continue with BizTalk, it's time to upgrade the Trial Edition (120 days) to the fully functional Standard Edition.

  • Backup all the BizTalk databases
    • Make sure SQL Server Agent is running. I changed the Start Mode from Manual (default) to Automatic;
    • Microsoft released an article about this. I decided to use the BizTalk Server Job. A (by BizTalk) pre-installed SQL Server Agent job that can be configured and enabled. I configured the BizTalk Server Job according to the instructions.
    • After the job is configured, right-click the job and choose 'Enable';
    • Right-click the job and choose 'Start job at step', select the first step and choose 'Start';
  • Uninstall BizTalk Server 2006 R2 Trial Edition via the Control Panel\Add Remove Programs;
  • Install BizTalk Server 2006 R2 again;
  • After the installation completes, run the Configuration Wizard.

Here I ran into an error. The wizard didn't allow me to join my existing BizTalk Server Group. I googled and found a similar case with BizTalk 2002. The cause in that case was:

This behavior occurs because changes are made to the database schema during setup of BizTalk Server 2002 SP1 that are not compatible with BizTalk Server 2002 for the database setup process.

So now I double checked the CD I got. And what happened, the supplier shipped the wrong CD. The license paper (and order) is about BizTalk Server 2006 R2 Standard Edition, but the CD contains the older R1. Grrr. Great :-(.

I logged on to MSDN but there is only a R2 Developer Edition available, and no Standard Edition. So here ends my story for now.
