Solving a Vista annoyance: Constantly Changing Folder Views

I like Vista a lot, but I can't deny that I have to apply lots of tweaks to adjust it the way I like. The Windows Explorer is highly improved over Windows XP, I like the column filtering, the favorites area and the ability to enable multi-select check boxes (enable in View tab from Folder Options). But Vista 'thinking how I want to see my folder' is pretty annoying. Every folder looks different. Sometimes customized for pictures, sometimes music etc. And if customize it, it resets my settings from time to time. Now, here's how to solve this (and have 1 setting for all your folders, without reset):

  • Start Registry Editor by running regedit.exe;
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
  • Delete the Bags and BagMRU sub keys
  • Recreate the Bags and BagMRU keys
  • Navigate to the Bags key, create a key AllFolders
  • Navigate to the AllFolders key, create a key Shell
  • Navigate to the Shell key, create a new string value with the name FolderType
  • Give it a value, the options are
    • NotSpecified
    • Contacts
    • Documents
    • Music
    • Pictures

I recommend the NotSpecified or Documents folder type. You have to do this procedure for every user account. Here's a screenshot with the end result.

Hope this helps,
